If you grew up in the GDR, I have a question for you?
Do you ever reminisce about, or miss the GDR/DDR? Are there ever days when you wish you could go back?
I was 7 years old, when the country stopped to exist, so many of the things, I know about it, are not my own experiences.
I guess, the technological standard of the GDR would be at the point, where we were in the late 90s today. Without the former partners, trade would be even harder than it was and the shortage on many products even worse.
Still, I often think, it might have been a better life for me. Freedom is a double-edged sword. If you can’t handle it, it will harm you; if you can’t afford to live a free life, there’s no use in it for you.
If you were not in opposition to the government, you could have a fair life in GDR; not better but also not worse than the one of the people around you.
The system took care of its citizens, in good as in bad sense. There was no real democracy, numerous people suffered under the secret service StaSi, it was hard to leave the country, but still, of course, it was not all bad or evil, and noone from today’s eastern Germany would claim that.
For two generations, this country was their homeland. Not to miss it from time to time would be strange, even if many made a better life since then. For those, who did not, lost their jobs or never found one in capitalism and are dependant on state benefits, even more.
